From what I hear in SPN circles, tumblr's far more useful for art--there's not a simple system for commenting, so with "reblogs" and whatnot, it's easy to lose control over a fic. But that's just through-the-grapevine rumblings; I've never tried it out.
If you do dust off the LJ comm, something that's very popular on the SPN h/c comms I'm on are comment-fic memes. There's one going at hoodie_time if you'd care to get ideas, and another at ohsam that seems to have just about run its course. :) FWIW, I've taken to calling hoodie_time folks DeanHealers! And I agree about Yahoo lists kind of falling by the wayside; the one I was on for Monkees stuff has been pretty well defunct for several years, especially since the few active members have finally drifted over to Facebook. I think I'm the only one of that group who's still active on LJ, even.
